The town’s economy in the beginning was based on the growth and sale of cattle, until the saleyards in Gunnedah eclipsed the operation of the saleyards in Curlewis. In order to address persistent water shortages in Curlewis due to the lack of a nearby river, a dam was built in the 1950s to serve as the residents’ water source until reticulated water was installed in the 1970s.
