About Katherine

The town of Katherine was once the home of indigenous Australian tribes like the Wardaman and the Jawoyn people. It was later turned into a railroad suburb after gold was discovered at the dawn of the 19th century. Situated on the banks of the Katherine River, the town is known as the "Crossroads of the Outback" because it converges near the Darwin and Barkley region as well as the Kakadu National Park. Residents in Katherine experience a tropical savannah climate, which means that they have distinct wet and dry seasons throughout the entire year. Visitors who would like to explore the area can visit the numerous parks in Katherine that include Jukes Park, Dakota Park and the Jurassic Cycad Gardens.
