Woombye is a suburban town located in the Sunshine Coast Region in the state of Queensland. The suburb got its name from an alteration of the Aboriginal word “wumbai,” which means “a place of black snake”. Another origin for Woombye's name comes from another term, “wambai,” which could either mean “a black myrtle” or “an axe handle” from the material.
The township of Woombye was previously surrounded by pineapple farms, which have now been converted into acreage properties and residential subdivisions. Pay the iconic local hotel a visit, or drop in to the nearby Big Pineapple.
