A coastal suburb under the local government area of Sunshine Coast Region in Queensland, Bokarina is situated 9 kilometres north of Caloundra, 12 kilometres south-southeast of Maroochydore and 12.7 kilometres southeast of Sunshine Coast. Bokarina is among the several suburbs that were situated in an area once called Kawana Island, which was later renamed Kawana Waters. The name “Bokarina” was chosen upon the request of Alfred Grant Pty Ltd, believing that it was an Aboriginal word for “middle.” This was in reference to the town’s establishment halfway through the development scheme of Kawana Waters in 1969. Bokarina rose during the early 1980s, then called Bokarina Beach, with the first subdivision situated between the foreshore reserve and the sports complex on Nicklin Way. The residential layout was completed come the mid-1980s, but the suburb’s southern area remains undeveloped. Bokarina is home to the Kawana Waters State College, Australian Institute of Psychology, Stockland Park and the Esplanade Park.
