Situated on the Dawson River, Theodore is a town in the Shire of Banana in Queensland. The Wulli Wulli people were the original inhabitants of Theodore before it was first settled by Joseph Thompson. The building of a dam at The Gorge of the Dawson River created 100,000 acres of fertile land, and the support of Ted Theodore, Premier of Queensland, for the irrigation scheme led to the town being named after him in his honour. Before that, Theodore had been known as Castle Creek, named after the railway station that was itself named after a creek that flowed into the Dawson River. The town’s main industry is coal mining.
