Tannum Sands is a coastal town located on the central east coast of Queensland. It sits within the Gladstone region and has a neighbouring twin town called Boyne Island. The two suburbs are separated only by the Boyne River, which is linked by the John Oxley Bridge. It is 9 km’s from the Bruce Highway and approximately 20 km’s from Gladstone.
Predominately a tourist and residential town, local employment is supported by the nearby Boyne Island Aluminium Smelter and Gladstone based industries.
Tannum Sands, has a small variety of schools, including a small private school, and the area has a strong sporting community with a number of parks and ovals accommodating outdoor sports. There is a tennis, squash and swimming centre.
Recently awarded “Queensland’s Friendliest Beach” and “Queenslands Tidiest Beach”, the main beach has beautifully landscaped parklands, and a lifesaver patrolled beach with a family friendly atmosphere. Tannum Sands is renowned for its long white sandy shorelines perfect for surfing, kite surfing and superb year round swimming conditions.
Boyne Tannum Hookup, Australia’s largest Family fishing event held on the Queens Birthday long weekend is held at Bray Park with over 300 entrants entering annually.
To the south of Tannum main beach is Wild Cattle Island – an untouched National Park and sand island separated from the mainland by Wild Cattle Creek.
