Alyangula is a mining town on the northwestern side of Groote Eylandt, which is the biggest island in the Gulf of Carpentaria that is situated around 50 kilometres away from the Northern Territory mainland and 600 kilometres east of Darwin. Alyangula is an unincorporated territory within the Northern Region of the Australian state. Alyangula is situated 17.2 kilometres northwest of the Groote Eylandt Airport and the community of Angurugu, the largest city in the island. Groote Eylandt is owned by and the homeland of the Anindilyakwa Aboriginal people, and the local Aboriginal Land Council initially did not encourage tourism. The island was eventually opened to the public with permission in recent years, and a resort style hotel was eventually opened in the town of Alyangula.
