Shellharbour is a suburb located in the Illawarra region of New South Wales. 104 km’s from Sydney and approximately 3 hours drive from Canberra, it is framed between the sparkling waters of the Tasman Sea and the magnificent Illawarra Escarpment, with Lake Illawarra to the north and the Minnamurra River to the South.
Centred around the small recreational harbour is the main town and it has two main beaches, Shellharbour Beach and Shellharbour South Beach that heads toward Bass Point.
A relaxed laid back seaside town, with lovely street café’s and shops, it also has a cultural arty vibe, with an abundance of local artists, museums and the Roo Theatre Company in the middle of town. Adjacent to the harbour is a “Beverly Whitfield” saltwater swimming pool and the Tom “Scout” Willoughby cricket Oval. The township also has it’s own airport, the “Illawarra Regional Airport” that offers microlight flights or adrenaline rushing skydiving.
Locals and visitors both enjoy the harbour for its great surf breaks and with the stunning Illawarra Lake playground on the doorstep, offering kayaking, charter boat fishing, snorkeling, picnicking and more, there is something to keep everyone occupied.
Bass Point, the long peninsula to the South is the regions only marina aquatic reserve and one of the South Coasts’ best scuba diving and snorkeling precincts.
