A suburb in the northern area of Wollongong, Bulli is located on the south coast of New South Wales and approximately 70 kilometres south of Sydney. Prior to European settlement beginning around 1815, the area was inhabited by the Wodi Wodi Aborigines. The suburb’s name came from an Aboriginal word for “double or two mountains.” Bulli was once a coal mining village, with operations by the Bulli Coal Company beginning in 1862. A rail was built from the mine to Bulli Jetty at Sandon Point, where coal was deposited for loading onto ships.
