Wickham is a suburb within the local government area of the City of Newcastle in New South Wales. The small, inner suburb is located about 3 kilometres away from Newcastle’s central business district. The name Wickham was originally just a misspelling of “Whickham,” which means “village by the creek.” Wickham became a municipality in 1871 and James Hannell became its first mayor. On September 2, 1936, the Wickham railway station opened. It is part of the Newcastle-Maitland line, which was opened in 1857. The Wickham Public school, which is based on the Edwardian style of building, was opened in 1904. Cricket is a popular sport in the area. The local team is called HamWicks, which is a combination of the suburbs Hamilton and Wickham.
