Gateshead is a suburban town located in the local government area of the City of Lake Macquarie. The suburb was named after the Gateshead area in north-eastern England. W.T. Verge, who was the first land surveyor of the Australian town, is believed to be the one to give the name in 1876. Historical records show that the first settlers in Gateshead arrived 1887. At that time, farming was a primary source of livelihood as well as poultry farming and fruit production. Other industries include mining, which began in in the early 1900s. Today, Gateshead has become a residential community. Local businesses and services in the suburb include hot water systems, motor engineers and repairers, building contractors, steel fabricators and manufacturers.
