Charlestown is a suburb of the City of Lake Macquarie and the largest town within the city in New South Wales. It is approximately 10 km’s south west of the central business district of Newcastle. Encompassed by residential suburbs it is located on the Pacific Highway.
Although Newcastle has its own commercial hub, Charlestown is the greater and more superior of the business districts. It is also serves as the areas transport hub.
The town has a number of high schools and primary schools comprising Charlestown South Public, Charlestown East Public with Hillsborough Public and St Mary’s High School sitting on the boundaries of the suburb.
Charlestown is home to one of the largest shopping complexes in the region. Charlestown Square is located just off the Pacific Highway and attracts locals from far and wide, housing all the major retailers and food supermarkets along with popular chain and boutique stores.
In recent years the centre went through a major upgrade with over 100 new shops, a Reading Cinema, including 2 gold class Cinemas and employment of an additional 1300 people significantly boosting the local economy.
Charlestown Reserve and Golf Course sit just outside the boundaries of the suburb.
