Orange is a city in the Central West region of New South Wales, 254 kilometres west of Sydney. Orange had an estimated population of 40,000 making the city a significant regional centre. Orange is the birthplace of poets Banjo Paterson and Kenneth Slessor, although Paterson lived in Orange for only a short time as an infant. Walter W. Stone, book publisher (Wentworth Books) and passionate supporter of Australian literature, was also born in Orange. The first Australian Touring Car Championship, known today as V8 Supercar Championship Series, was held at the Gnoo Blas Motor Racing Circuit in 1960. Famed for its fresh produce, cool climate wines, colourful foliage and snowy Winters, Orange is a gorgeous getaway. A great way to learn about the history and heritage of Orange is to ramble along the self-guided Orange Heritage Trail. Pick up a brochure from the Visitor Information Centre, where the walk begins, and wind your way around the pretty streets and parks. From apples and berries to truffles and grass-fed beef, the Orange region is renowned for its produce. The Agrestic Grocer and the Orange Farmers Market sell gourmet delights and fresh food. There are also winery tours and annual events such as Orange F.O.O.D Week and the Orange Wine Festival. Getting to Orange is easy. The drive west from Sydney through the World Heritage-listed Blue Mountains takes 3h 40 min. You can also take a train or fly to the town’s airport.
