Woy Woy is a coastal community and suburb located within the local government area of the Gosford City Council in New South Wales. The town is an essential population hub within the City of Gosford. It is also considered to be a dormitory town of Sydney.
The term Woy Woy is derived from an Aboriginal word that supposedly means 'big lagoon’ or 'much water,’ which refer to the tidal channel close to the suburb’s centre. Before its present name, it was originally called Webb's Flat in reference to James Webb who became the first European to arrive in the Brisbane Water area in 1823.
