Malanda is a suburban town located in the local government area of the Tablelands Regional Council in the state of Queensland. The first signs of development in the suburb took place in the 1900s upon the discovery of tin and copper deposits, which led to a steady migration of engineers and miners to the area. The town’s name is recognised as a synonymous term for milk and cheese across northern Queensland. The industry is a significant part of Malanda, where locals promote it as “the headquarters for one of the largest and longest milk runs in the world.” Tourism is also an important sector as there are many different attractions in Malanda such as the Malanda Falls Conservation Park, the Peeramon Hotel and the Malanda Art Trail. Other popular landmarks in the suburb are heritage-listed sites, including the Majestic Picture Theatre, the Malanda Falls Swimming Pool and the St. James Catholic Church & Altar.
