In 1861, John Lander leased an area called the Mooloolah Back Plain from the Queensland government, where he and other pioneers engaged in timber harvesting along the Blackall Range. The site of the present-day town – the Lander’s Chute – was the base region of these “chutes” and where the harvested logs would be collected for transporting to the timber mills. Today, the town is mainly residential and surrounded by forested areas, with a few farming lands and small businesses scattered in the area.
