Booragul is a suburb located in the City of Lake Macquarie. The area was named after an Aboriginal word that means “warm place” or “summer”. The earliest known settlers in the area were Dr. James Mitchell and his daughter Margaret Scott Mitchell, the wife of William Bell Quigley. The Quiqleys settled in Awaba Park, a waterfront location. Back then, the industry that Booragul thrived on was a slaughterhouse located near Marmong Creek. During World War II, part of the Quigley Estate was used to house armed forces. The families of soldiers then remained in the area even after the war was over. There was also a post-war estate that was built known as the Commonwealth Cottages.
