It was the center of a former dairy, timber and citrus country, and now serves a feeder town for the mining industry of the Upper Hunter region, as well as the city of Newcastle. The area was once inhabited by a clan of the Wonnarua people, and European settlement followed after it was surveyed by Colonel William Paterson in 1801. The river beside the first spot he surveyed was named in his honour and the town itself soon after. While the present township is mostly surrounded by rural lands, Paterson is home to a number of historical attractions and sites maintained by the Paterson Historical Society, including a museum collection in the Paterson Court House, Paterson’s corn staddle in Tucker Park and St. Ann’s Presbyterian Church, the oldest Presbyterian Church on mainland Australia.
