A small township within the Dungog Shire local government area of New South Wales, Paterson is located on the Paterson River in the lower Hunter Region, 16 kilometres north of Maitland, 25 kilometres south-southwest of Dungog, 50.6 kilometres northwest of Newcastle, 35.9 kilometres northeast of Greta and 181 kilometres northeast of Sydney. It was the center of a former dairy, timber and citrus country, and now serves a feeder town for the mining industry of the Upper Hunter region, as well as the city of Newcastle. While the present township is mostly surrounded by rural lands, Paterson is home to a number of historical attractions and sites maintained by the Paterson Historical Society, including a museum collection in the Paterson Court House, Paterson’s corn staddle in Tucker Park and St. Ann’s Presbyterian Church, the oldest Presbyterian Church on mainland Australia.
