Tomago is a rural and industrial suburb located in the Hunter Region. The location got its name from the Aboriginal word that means “sweet water”. Several businesses are in the area including Tomago Sandbeds, Valley Longwall International, Forgacs Shipyard Tomago and the Tomago Aluminium Smelter.
Tomago’s main feature is the Tomago House, an agricultural estate that was built in the 1840s. Tomago House features a vineyard, a chapel and an expanse of pastoral lands. Richard Windeyer was the one who built the estate, and when he died, his wife Maria took over the construction. The estate is now open to visitors and can be hired for special events. Tomago House shows how the estate owners lived in the 1800s and the interiors of the place is still intact.
