Rutherford is a western suburb of the City of Maitland in the Hunter Region of New South Wales. The New England Highway passes directly through the town.
Consisting of mixed residential development, bulky goods retail including Bunnings and Masters, light industry manufacturing plants, and a small commercial centre, it is serviced by The Rutherford Public School, St Pauls Primary School and the Rutherford Technology High School.
The town has major food retail outlets including Coles, Woolworths, Aldi’s and various café’s and eateries. There are sporting, indoor and outdoor facilities and two significant ovals, the Max McMahon Oval and the Norm Chapman oval.
Fringing the suburb is the Walka Water Works, a popular picnic and recreation area in Maitland, which is steeped in history as part of the Lower Hunters heritage. The reserve features a pump house built in 1887 with striking chimney and ornate brickwork that is one of the largest and most intact 19th century industrial complexes in the Hunter Valley. 300 species of birdlife and walking trails surround the lake and it is available for weddings and functions.
Rutherford has a Methodist cemetery, offers a Mercure Hotel for passing visitors and the Maitland Airport a general aviation airport, also known as Russell Field which houses the Maitland Skydive centre for those looking for an adrenalin rush and a spectacular view of the Hunter Valley.
