Fringing the suburb is the Walka Water Works, a popular picnic and recreation area in Maitland, which is steeped in history as part of the Lower Hunters heritage. The reserve features a pump house built in 1887 with striking chimney and ornate brickwork that is one of the largest and most intact 19th century industrial complexes in the Hunter Valley. 300 species of birdlife and walking trails surround the lake and it is available for weddings and functions.
Rutherford has a Methodist cemetery, offers a Mercure Hotel for passing visitors and the Maitland Airport a general aviation airport, also known as Russell Field which houses the Maitland Skydive centre for those looking for an adrenalin rush and a spectacular view of the Hunter Valley.
