Located between Sandy Hollow and Merriwa on the Golden Highway, Gungal is a locality in New South Wales’ Upper Hunter Shire local government area. Gungal is near certain natural wonders such as Mount Danger, Manobalai Nature Reserve and Goulburn River National Park. Lovers of the outdoors can visit Gungal and explore these nearby attractions. Manobalai Nature Reserve has a variety of geographical features, such as sandstone peaks, mesas, grassy woodlands and dry woodlands. The reserve houses wildlife such as the white-haired honeyeater, rockwarbler, robust velvet gecko and glossy black cockatoo. Residents can also travel to the town of Merriwa in order to get supplies and avail of services. Some participate in Merriwa’s annual Festival of Fleeces, where farmers celebrate everything about the animals they raise by holding markets and sheep competition. One highlight of the festival is the Running of the Sheep, where over 200 sheep wearing red woollen socks are let loose on the streets.
