Organisation is key when moving to your new house as it determines how smooth the whole process will run.

You need to use every effective organisation possible. Make use of techniques such as colour coding and labels for each specific room to make moving boxes easier.

When organising your moving process or strategy, use special items like a printed checklist (special to do list) and a moving binder (contains important documents, moving contracts, receipts, and other moving documents) - whatever you need to have everything on hand easily.

Moving house checklist

Moving house isn't as easy as gathering up your stuff and putting it in boxes. Below is checklist to follow:

  • Use a moving binder containing all documents necessary for your move.

  • List, box, take photos, disassemble, and colour code your stuff for easy transfer.

  • Ensure the van has easy access to your new location. (see if there are any parking restrictions in the area).

  • Hire a moving company and make sure to buy insurance for the items and fragile items you need to move.

  • Change the location on your driver's license and your vehicle registration form.

  • Notifying all services you about your change of location (post redirecting, internet service providers, landline and so on…)

  • Transfer your rental or owner insurance as well as insurance for the content of your old home to your new location.

What should be done 2 weeks before moving?

One of the first tasks that should do is to update your mail address so the new residents of your old house won't receive your mail.

You should do the same for all the utility providers you have so you don't miss out on any of the services you've subscribed for (such as TV, internet provider, and so on…)

Once that's done, take a few days to focus on gathering supplies for packing and organising your stuff. Supplies such as boxes, tapes, tags, colour codes, binders, paper/plastic bags, and so on.

Stock up on essentials that can last such as food, clothing, and bathroom essentials (like toilet paper, soap, and so on) so you have everything necessary on hand.

What are the essentials for moving out?

There's no point moving to a lifeless house with no power supply, water or any basic utility service so the best option is to ensure all utility services are paid for in advance. Another set of essentials to consider are the ones for moving - boxes, packing tape, box cutters (for g packing and unpacking) , a first aid kit, plastic/paper bag, sharpies, tools for furniture, batteries, torchlight, and light bulbs. And for the kitchen, what you need is a few basic cookware items. Such as pots, pans, silverware, cups, and a portable electric stove to keep you going until you're stable.
