Will the remodel have to be completed in parts depending on when the doors reach you (or the professional you have contracted)? ### Specialty items Are there any special features that need to be considered? Are you choosing custom doors that may take longer to install? #### Change requests If you have any changes after installation is complete, the replacement schedule will likely be extended. Resurfacing kitchen cost

Resurfacing kitchen cost

Resurfacing a kitchen is much more budget-friendly than replacing the old cabinetry. An average-sized kitchen will cost a maximum of $10,000 for resurfacing, depending on several factors. Every kitchen needs specific and tailored options and the average price of kitchen varies between $600 and $6,500. The average cost of kitchen resurfacing is outlined below. - Complete coverage of the kitchen, including splashbacks, benchtop, handles, and cabinets, will cost between $4,500 and $6,500. - Half coverage, including either just the benchtops or the cabinets, costs between $2,000 and $3,000. - Just the shower tray cost ranges from between $600 to $1,000. ## Factors behind the final kitchen resurfacing cost - Numbers of cabinets to be resurfaced in the kitchen along with their size. - The quality of the new kitchen surface that will replace the previously installed surface. - Installation charges. - Total area in the kitchen that needs to be resurfaced. - Complexity of the job. A tough job with hard to reach location will invite additional expenses. ## Is it cheaper to resurface or replace kitchen cabinets? Yes, it is cheaper to resurface the kitchen cabinets rather than replacing them. [Kitchen cabinet replacement](/guides/kitchen-renovations-installations/replace-kitchen-cabinet-doors-cost) attracts an expense of $20,000, while resurfacing costs a mere$10,000 on an average. Some people opt for kitchen and bathroom resurfacing together. Homeowners can opt for DIY for resurfacing kitchen cabinets, but replacement shall be done by an experienced professional. Resurfacing cost is expected to be 40% to 50% less kitchen cabinet replacement. ## Cabinet resurfacing - The estimated cost of resurfacing is around $10,000 or less. - If the existing cabinet doors are not damaged and well-functioning, a mere coat of stain or paint is sufficient, eliminating the need for resurfacing. - For materials that cannot be painted, a veneer is another alternate. - Homeowners can opt for a new cabinet only if the old ones are not functioning correctly or are damaged. ## Cabinet replacement - Partial or complete kitchen cabinet replacement is deemed costly, around $20,000. - The estimated price is expected to change, subject to job complexity, the time required and the type of cabinet that homeowners choose to buy. - New countertops further add to the cost, which is optional. ## How long does it take to resurface an entire kitchen? Kitchen renovations need at least three days and not more than seven days under normal circumstances. Several factors govern the total resurfacing time. Cabinet measurement consumes 30 minutes if the task is performed smoothly. Old cabinet surface removal consumes at least 3 hours, which can go up to 5 hours. ### Spraying booths Professional installers follow a protocol to complete the job, which increases the job time. First, they take the doors and surfaces that need to be resurfaced to the spray booths. These spraying booths are set up at their workplace. The spraying process alone consumes less time while resulting in an attractive finish. Working on the surfaces after disassembling them is far more efficient than working on surfaces fixed at a place. The resurfacing process has an odour similar to that of a new paint job, which might cause respiratory issues to the homeowners. Therefore, taking the surfaces to the spraying booth is recommended. ### Lasting period Professionally done and maintained resurfacing job will leave its impact for 10 to 15 years. ### Warranty To prove their quality of work, some pro workers give a warranty on the task that they performed. The warranty period ranges from at least one year to five years, differing from one professional to another. The use of low-quality materials during the resurfacing job will force the professionals to give a limited warranty. ## What does the process of resurfacing a kitchen involve? The kitchen resurfacing process comprises of various steps, outlined below. - Discussing the resurfacing plans and possibilities. - Making an estimate of expenses. This is usually 40% to 50% less expensive than replacing the cabinets. - Taking measurements of the cabinets. - Removing the surfaces that will be resurfaced. Applying veneer layers, which is a lamination or wood that's added to the cabinets, is available in different forms. Polyurethane, plastic-based veneer, [is popular in kitchens.](/guides/kitchen-renovations-installations/polyurethane-kitchen-cost) ## Ordinary - Made of wood. - No adhesive. - Solvent or water-based cement used for application. ## Core plywood - Made of wood veneer - 1/8 or 1/4 inch thickness ## PSA (Pressure-Sensitive Adhesive) - Pre-existing adhesive - Just peel off the covering layer and stick it on.

What is a Cabinet Roller Door?

What is a Cabinet Roller Door?

This kind of door is built into the unit that houses it, so it doesn't take up any valuable room space in your home or business. The door itself slides horizontally along its track to open and close, which means you can get things out through either side just as easily. The cabinet roller door is a good solution for storage areas, especially if you're not sure exactly how much space you need. ## What is a tambour door cabinet? A tambour door cabinet or a tambortech door is very similar to a roller door, but instead of the panel being pulled horizontally along the track it rolls up vertically. Tambour doors transform kitchens and this cabinet offers more space than a roller door as you can have tall units with tall doors. This makes it ideal for tall cupboards with tall items inside them. They're also very easy to clean and look great with [timber kitchen benchtops](/guides/kitchen-renovations-installations/timber-kitchen-benchtops-price). ## What is a cabinet roller shutter? A cabinet roller door shutter conceals clutter and kitchen implements behind an easy-to-use track system allowing ease of use. ## How do you make a roller cabinet door? To make a roller cabinet door, the first thing you need to do is choose your track. The two main types are top jamb and face fixed, so decide which one will work best for your needs. If it's going on a cupboard or tall unit, then go with face fixed as this one sits flush against the wall and out of the way. ## What is the best door for a kitchen? There are many different styles of cabinet doors for kitchens, including tambour and roller cabinet doors. A tambour door is similar to a roller door with the panels either rolling up or being pulled horizontally. The main benefit here is that you can choose how high or low they go, so if you only need to access items stored somewhere specific then it's perfect. A roller cabinet door is also great as it doesn't take up any valuable space in your kitchen, which makes it ideal for kitchens where space is tight. Another popular option for kitchen cupboards is soft close hinges; these make opening and closing very quiet. They can easily [match your kitchen doors](/guides/kitchen-renovations-installations/timber-kitchen-doors-price). ## Are tambour doors and roller shutters the same? Although tambour doors and roller shutters are both doors on tracks, they're very different. A tambour door is more like a blind in the sense that it rolls up vertically toward the ceiling. The advantage here is that you can easily clean them as they sit inside your cabinet while a roller shutter sits outside on top of the door frame, making it harder to reach. ## How do I measure my cupboard for a roller cabinet door? To measure your cupboard for a roller cabinet door, first, open up the unit and remove any items you have stored inside so there's nothing in the way. Then, measure all the way across the top of the unit and then down along both sides to get an accurate idea of how big your door needs to be. You can then take these measurements to your local supplier so they know exactly what size you need. ## How do I fix tambour doors? The tambour door is hung on tracks using brackets that are screwed onto your walls or inside cupboards before being put together with central guides. The entire rail system holds the door in place but allows it to slide easily for easy access to items stored inside without taking up any valuable space at all. To fix a tambour door, simply drill screws straight into the wall or use screws that come with guides depending on where you've chosen to install your rail system. If they are beyond repair you may need to [replace your kitchen cabinets](/guides/kitchen-renovations-installations/replace-kitchen-cabinet-doors-cost). ## How do you install roll up cabinet doors? To install roll up cabinet doors, you will first need the track system. This is simply screwed onto your walls or inside cupboards with central guides to hold it in place. Once this is fixed into place, you can then install the tambour door by hanging it on the rail system with brackets before adding central guides to keep everything together. ## How do you fix an outside roller door? To fix an outside roller door, you will need to measure the size of the track that's currently in place. The new door will be slightly larger than this to accommodate for the extra width. Simply paint your wall or surrounding areas the same colour as the door so it looks like it has always been there. Once this is done, fit two solid metal brackets on either side. These will go over the top of your existing rail system to hold everything in place. Then attach a central guide by screwing it into place and cutting off any excess using wire cutters. Finally, lift both sides of your roller shutter arrows and attach a small guide at either end before resting them onto your rails and screwing them in place. ## How long does it take to install cabinet roller doors? How long it takes to install cabinet roller doors will vary depending on the type you choose. If you have tambour doors, these simply hang vertically up the track until they sit flush against the ceiling so are very easy to fit by just hanging them in place. Roller shutters are slightly more difficult as these are screwed into place using metal brackets but only take around 30 minutes to one hour to complete. What is a Kitchen Bulkhead?

What is a Kitchen Bulkhead?

A bulkhead in a house is any framed wall that separates one room from another or separates the house from the outdoors. The term bulkhead is a term borrowed from ships, and it refers to an interior wall within the vessel. Many kitchens have one or more kitchen design bulkheads, while some homes may have none at all. Kitchen bulkhead cabinets can be made of wood or drywall and enclose a staircase that leads to a basement, for example. A different type of kitchen cupboards bulkhead for the kitchen renovation is one that separates the cooking area from the walk-in pantry or food storage space. The reason these walls are called kitchen cabinets bulkheads stems from the purpose they serve, which is to enclose certain spaces and prevent their contents (usual foodstuffs) from spilling out into other areas of the home. They're most often included in a kitchen renovation with walk-in pantries or rooms dedicated to food storage, not for units like those with [cabinet roller doors](/guides/kitchen-renovations-installations/what-is-a-cabinet-roller-door). A bulkhead can also be referred to as a "buffer wall", because it separates two rooms with vastly different temperatures so that one doesn't influence the temperature of the other when either one gets too hot or too cold. It's always best to have at least some measure of thermal separation between rooms in your home, even if you have a central HVAC. ## What does a bulkhead look like? A kitchen bulkhead is a wall that separates one room from another. In most cases, it is made of drywall and covers the opening to the staircase leading to a basement or attic space. It can also be made entirely of wood facing in some homes, which may have been common when these solid-wood bulkheads were more widely used in older houses. A bulkhead can be any height and extends from floor to ceiling, but there's no limit on how thin it may be. A bulkhead now has similar technologies and amazing kitchen design. ## Are kitchen bulkheads a good idea? There are pros and cons to having one or more bulkheads in your kitchen. The primary advantage is that they create a physical barrier and provide insulation, so heat doesn't transfer between two rooms at different temperatures. A secondary advantage of these walls is the fact that they break up an otherwise monotonous wall surface, which can give your kitchen a more visually interesting appearance. On the negative side, if you have an entrance into your basement or attic space through the bulkhead, then you will lose square footage in each room because there's less usable space available in them. This is why many homeowners leave these bulkheads unopened and permanently sealed off after installation, so they can reap the benefits of insulation without losing any room space. ## Is there any reason not to have a kitchen bulkhead? Yes, there are several reasons you might want to avoid installing one or more kitchen bulkheads in your home. The first is that they make it harder to access a stairway banister, which is often needed when carrying items up and down the stairs. They require insulation to be effective at keeping room temperatures separate and insulation comes with an additional cost and inconvenience during installation and removal for future renovations or additions to the kitchen. ## Are kitchen bulkheads out of style? Kitchen bulkheads were used as early as the 1920s and 1930s and many homes before World War II had them. After that time, they began to fall out of style because builders wanted to maximise the amount of space in a home during reconstruction or renovations. Due to their practicality and effectiveness at keeping rooms apart with varying temperatures they're now making a strong comeback in many traditional-style homes. ## Do bulkheads add structural support to a kitchen? No, this is a myth. Bulkheads are not load-bearing walls and do not add any additional support to the structure of your home. In fact, they can be installed in locations that would lose some structural stability if they weren't present. This is what makes them great for adding aesthetic appeal but bad news when you need to renovate an attached garage or make changes to a basement extension. Most homeowners who want to make changes will have no choice but to remove their bulky wall and rebuild it in a different location in order to facilitate access for future renovations or additions on the exterior of the house. Kitchen bulkheads were originally designed for insulation purposes only, so they lack features like electrical wiring that would make them more expensive to build. IF you are looking to hire someone to do kitchen repair work, the New South Wales Department of Fair Trading has some helpful information on hiring people for minor trade work, such as [kitchen remodelling or cabinet repair](https://www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au/trades-and-businesses/licensing-and-qualifications/minor-trade-work). Check if the regulations apply to your local area. ## How do you make a kitchen bulkhead? In order to make a kitchen bulkhead, you'll need to have some experience with drywall installation and proper insulation. In addition, you should have an understanding of how insulation works so that you can choose the appropriate type for your home in relation to the size and design of your bulkhead. If you're not comfortable with this process yet, then it might be best to hire a professional who is experienced in bulkhead construction. You'll also need a few other tools. A stud finder will help you locate the wooden beams on your wall where screws can be inserted into studs for added support. You may even want to invest in a foam cutting tool like a hot-wire cutter if your chosen drywall doesn't come in the desired size already cut. Planning is crucial to any bulkhead installation. You'll need to know where you want the bulkhead opening and how big it needs to be before getting started on construction. If possible, hire an architect or builder who can help with this process so your bulkhead plan doesn't deviate too far from the original design of your home. You can time your bulkhead project with a [kitchen resurface](/guides/kitchen-renovations-installations/resurfacing-kitchen-cost). ## Do modern kitchens have cornices? Yes, some modern kitchen designs and tips actually do include cornices. When installed correctly, these can add a lot of visual appeal gap to your kitchen. There are numerous variations with features on the traditional cornice design that homeowners should consider before enclosing or choosing one for their renovation project. ## What are kitchen bulkheads made of? Bulkheads can actually be made from a variety of materials, although the most common bulkhead elements are made of drywall and insulation to keep different rooms at different temperatures. Other materials you might find include the below. - Metal siding. - Paint and wallpaper. - Fibreglass mesh panels. Some homeowners opt to use local materials for their bulkheads because these items cost less than purchasing pre-cut panels as you would find at a home improvement store or big-box retailer. This option is often preferable if you want to install your bulkhead yourself without hiring any outside help; however, it's important that you do your research first to make sure that these alternatives will actually perform the way you want them to. ## Do bulkheads provide added insulation? Yes, bulkheads add insulation for a fraction of the cost of traditional construction methods or even modern techniques that rely on heavy materials like fibreglass. Bulkheads are also lightweight and sit flush against your walls so they don't affect construction elsewhere in your property. This is especially important when it comes time to make renovations to spaces below or above where the bulkhead is installed as without proper support from surrounding walls, these bulky elements could cause major structural damage. In addition, since bulkheads are designed primarily for aesthetics, they tend to weigh less than something like concrete would if applied for similar insulation purposes.

Where to Put Knobs and Handles on Kitchen Cabinets

Where to Put Knobs and Handles on Kitchen Cabinets

The overall design of your kitchen cabinets is the first thing you should consider before purchasing cabinet hardware. You want to ensure that you add some style and flair with new cabinet knobs or cabinet pulls and ensure the best quality for your investment in beautiful cabinets. With all of the different types of knobs available, you can also mix knobs with finger pulls. When deciding how to place the cabinet hardware, ensure they do not interfere with any existing features such as hinges, knobs, pull handles, or anything else. It is best practice to always check with the manufacturer guidelines in case there are specific instructions for placement based on their design though they are mostly the same rules. Some manufacturers may recommend avoiding placing or installing upper cabinets directly above certain areas of the kitchen cabinets, such as the upper corner. Sometimes a work surface drawer front may be located here to block access if a handle were placed there on the top edge called rails. You need to ensure you know where the cabinet knobs and knobs or pulls handles will complement the overall design of your cabinet door and cabinet drawers, not ruin it. ## Where should I place cabinet door hinges? This is an important consideration as you install cabinet hardware [to replace doors](/guides/kitchen-renovations-installations/replace-kitchen-cabinet-doors-cost) as it determines the placement of the cabinet knobs and pulls/or knobs and pulls handles on a given door front. ### Inset hinges Inset hinges are placed inside a hole drilled in each side of the wall cabinets door frame or cabinet box. The screws that attach these hinges to either side of your cabinets sit flush with the opposite side surface of your kitchen when installed correctly. These types of hardware placement do not interfere with any other features such as drawer fronts, making them a good option. Inset hinges look great when they are the same type of material as your cabinet door. However, this is not always an option. The style will vary from a straight look to one where the hinge "leans" out from the door front. The knob and the horizontal rail should be lined. ### Butt hinges These types of hardware are attached directly onto the inside surface area of the frames on kitchen cabinets and top drawers. They produce a very simple and modern look but do not contribute to any design or aesthetic features when used. Also, there is no space between each side of the door frame, making it difficult to fit cabinet knobs and pull them through without drilling new screw holes for each piece. If you remove your existing door hinges, you will be able to see these holes, which are normally only visible on the inside of the [cabinet door](/guides/kitchen-renovations-installations/timber-kitchen-doors-price). ### Surface-mounted cabinet hardware These types of cabinet knob placement and cabinet pulls placement are attached directly to either your cabinet door or kitchen drawer fronts' surface area. They can be used in conjunction with but do not interfere with any other features such as hinges or finger pull handles that may already be installed. Sometimes use scrap wood to create cabinet hardware jigs to ensure the hardware is correctly placed or parts come included when purchasing; however, it is also possible to purchase them separately. If you choose this option, make sure you know where they should go before installing knobs so they do obstruct any other features on your existing cabinetry, such as cup pulls and finger pulls. The top drawer should be centred. ## Where should I put handles on kitchen cabinets? Design, aesthetics, and functionality also determine the placement of handle hardware. Before purchasing or placing cabinet knobs or pulls, you should consider if they will be going on a kitchen cabinet door, upper cabinets, all the drawers front, a worktop drawer front, a cupboard door frame, or drawers in an island unit. Different types of install handles can be placed throughout different parts of your kitchen base cabinets due to how each type works best with one another. All of these factors will affect cabinet knob placement and where you place the handle hardware on finger pulls. If the majority of your kitchen cabinetry has doors, then this may be where most styles of handle or cabinet hardware are installed at the top edge. Some manufacturers recommend that only flush-mount style cabinet knob placement and pulls be used on these areas as they look best when visually "fit" into the door fronts. However, some manufacturers may allow for other types of handle/cabinet hardware to be used on doors if there is still a certain degree of visual consistency between your cabinets and any place cabinet knobs or drawer pull you select on the bottom corner with drawer pulls. If you have an existing set of upper cabinets on your kitchen cabinetry that requires being changed out, it is important to measure these two knobs so new ones can be bought to fit. This will ensure there is not too much hardware on one side compared to the other or that they are not spaced unevenly down the edges of each door front. If you are having trouble measuring them accurately using just your ruler, use masking tape wrapped around each handle to get an accurate reading of how many centimetres are between each end. One can use an appropriate pull to ensure it looks the same as the cabinet width. The cup should have an allowance for you to slip your fingers underneath instead of gripping protruding cabinet knobs and pulls. You can easily get them to [match your kitchen benchtops](/guides/kitchen-renovations-installations/timber-kitchen-benchtops-price). ## Where is the best hardware placement to put door knobs on kitchen cabinets? As a general rule, due to soft edges, if you place two kitchen cabinet knobs and cup pulls on your kitchen cabinets, it is best that they only be used on the doors instead of the drawer panel. If you use them for both types of handles on cabinet knob placement, there is the potential for them to collide on the top or bottom edge when opening and closing and look mismatched or misplaced. If you are unsure where the best handles would be on your cabinet doors, take measurements before removing any of the existing hardware parts to ensure that new ones will fit properly on the corner of the door. This can help prevent purchasing wrong-sized hardware or modifying your existing cabinetry after purchase and installation by making new holes for each pull handles piece. For longer kitchen drawers, you will require a long pull. Cup pulls, also called bin pulls, extend to the bottom rail and top rail of base cabinets. Using dark bronze or a rust colour brings about the traditional rather than the modern look. ## Do handles or doorknobs work best on kitchen cabinets? Choosing door handles or knob hardware for your cabinets depends on personal preference. If you are looking for more modern styles, then it may be worth investing in as they are generally small enough to allow each cabinet to appear streamlined and simple. On doors, pulls are typically installed with an upright orientation to ensure hardware is correctly installed. Cabinetry knobs should be on the opposite side of the door hinge mounted on the door stile. If you place door hardware installed on lower cabinets, make sure that all other types of hardware should not go anywhere else within your cabinetry. This includes hinges which often come included with a new kitchen cabinet. These will also need to be removed before installing any new knobs at the corner of the door or tab pulls, as their removal will normally create holes that require filling during cabinet knob placement. Also, note that an appliance pull should be used to support the weight and enhance proportionality. Considering renovating your kitchen?
