Refurbished in January 2019, locally owned and operated by Heath Smith, and Boston the Pub Pug, the Victoria Bathurst offers something for the whole crew. It is the ultimate hub for food, drink, arts, music, events & accommodation in the Central West. She’s an old pub, with old pub features, yet with a modern touch that’s not hell bent on being a smug hipster hangout. In either of the dining rooms and in the front bar, the walls are adorned in imagery conjured up by local artists. Smug hipsters are actually welcome. Karen’s are not. The Victoria is part-pub, restaurant, gallery, live music venue & boutique hotel. Each section of The Victoria has its own distinct style. The Victoria’s Publican Heath, is a chef by trade so you know the food on offer is top notch. Menu items consist of high quality starters and share snacks, the very popular Queenie’s Classics, right through to restaurant quality fair. The Vic also caters for Vegans and Crossfitters so You’ll have no issues spotting them, they’ll let you know they are about. Assist you celiac’s in your war on gluten. Upstairs from the pub, The Victoria houses 19 freshly renovated rooms that range from your lock stock single room and TV, all the way up to your Family sized room with all amenities, additional foldout couch and ensuite, all with room service. Little Alberts is a roomy, yet intimate live music joint with it’s own front door access that is custom made for live entertainment, private functions and all sorts of get-together. Sporting it’s own bar, this room has featured some of this countries finest musicians, featuring both original artists and tribute performances honouring some of history’s greatest works. Suss out the pubs socials to find out about any upcoming performances. The Backyard is the kid and dog friendly yard out the back of the pub. It’s a beaut hangout for you, your mates, your dogs and your family to have a couple cheeky lunchtime drinks and a top feed.

The Royal Hotel is rich with history, the first timber version of the hotel was built around 1840 but it tragically burnt down in the early 1894. The story goes that the ladies of the community were fed up with their men spending too much time at the pub, so they torched it! The original timber building was replaced with a stone building in 1895 and it is still standing proudly today. In 1880 the hotel became a railhead (where a railway line ends). In the old days, it used to be a three-week trip to Sydney but suddenly the railway line arrived and the trip became less than 24 hours. Back then, there were more than 3,500 people living here whereas numbers have now dwindled to just 180. Fire seems to be a recurring theme at The Royal because in 1930, a traveling salesman left a candle next to a window and the curtains caught alight. But just as the fabled phoenix arises from the ashes, so too does the Royal Hotel Capertee.

THE RYLSTONE CLUB….. BY J.W.TINDALE After World War II was finished, the Returned Service Men were invited to join the Rylstone Returned Service League Sub Branch. They held the monthly meetings in the Small Hall at 8 p.m. the first Saturday of the month. It was at one of these meetings that the idea of having their own Club Room was discussed. Several ideas were put to the meeting but no final decision was achieved except that a Committee be formed to seek the possibility of a Club of their own. Six of the new members were selected to form a committee. At that period, Glen Davis Shale Oil was closing and the people were leaving the site. Kerney’s Butchers Shop, opposite the Police Station, was closing so the committee paid the first two weeks rent for this building out of their own pockets We reported back to the RSL Meeting and told them what we had done. It was received with reservation, but the meeting approved of our action and gave us the Green Light to proceed. So now to get some finance: it was decided to have a Wool Drive. We sent out circulars telling people what we had in mind and we would like the Wool growers to donate a Fleece of Wool. It was a success. Some gave several. Mr. R.E Evans of Dabee gave us one hundred pounds which was a lot of money in those days; anyway we sold the wool which was bringing good money then. So now we had the Building and some finance – next, a working bee to convert a Butchers Shop into a Club Room. This completed, we purchased a few simple chairs, a 3/4 size billiard table, A S.H domestic fridge, a six penny S.H poker machine from Randwick Business Men’s Club in Sydney, a dart board, some floor coverings, and small items such as glasses etc.
