Mission Beach is a village located along the Coral Sea in Queensland, within the large government area of Cassowary Coast Region. The town is composed of previously separate villages: South Mission Beach, Mission Beach, Wongaling Beach, Bingil Bay and Carmoo. Dunk Island, a popular holiday destination, lies 4 kilometres offshore. The island is the largest island in the Family Islands National Park and is surrounded reefs. It is also known for its large population of different species of birds. Mission Beach is famous for being the home of the cassowary, a large flightless bird that can be found in the village's rainforest. The town has built a monument of a big cassowary at the Wongaling Beach shopping complex. It stands about 5 metres high.
