Karumba is a small town located in the Gulf Country of Queensland. In the 1870s, Karumba was called Norman Mouth because the location was near the entrance of the Norman River. Back then, gold mining was the main industry in the Gulf. In 1876, the name Norman Mouth was changed to Kimberley, but was later changed to Karumba to avoid confusion with the region in Western Australia also called Kimberley. By the 1960s, Karumba had become the major hub for Gulf fishing. Until today, Karumba’s main industries are barramundi and prawn fishing.
