A rural town under the local government area of Cassowary Coast Regional Council of Queensland, Mourilyan is located 8 kilometres south of Innisfail, 96 kilometres south of Cairns, 142 kilometres southwest of Mareeba and 1,586 kilometres northwest of Brisbane. In 1872, Captain John Moresby named the town after one of his officers, Lieutenant Mourilyan. A settlement with an extensive history in the sugar industry, the Mourilyan Sugar Company was founded in the early 1880. Its sugar mill was built in 1882 and completed two years later, making it one of the oldest in Australia.
