In 1872, Captain John Moresby named the town after one of his officers, Lieutenant Mourilyan. A settlement with an extensive history in the sugar industry, the Mourilyan Sugar Company was founded in the early 1880. Its sugar mill was built in 1882 and completed two years later, making it one of the oldest in Australia. In 2006, Cyclone Larry crossed the Queensland coast and passed by the area 10 kilometres north of Mourilyan, causing substantial damage to several houses and destroyed the sugar mill, which was then still the town’s main source of employment. Even so, Mourilyan’s sweet legacy lives on in the Australian Sugar Industry Museum, now the town’s main attraction, which features a number of relics from the sugar farming history of North Queensland.
