The suburb of Mooroolbool is situated in the Cairns Region of Queensland, 5.4 kilometres west of the central business district of Cairns. Mooroolbool is composed both of residential areas and commercial properties, with conservation areas in the west. A street in the suburb, Kingsford Street, was named after Richard Ash Kingsford, the mayor of the regional city of Cairns from 1885 – 1886 and 1889. Significant development in the town happened only in the post-war years, with the population booming in the 1990s. Mooroolbool is named after Mooroolbool Peak, which is located in the nearby town of Copperlode. The name comes from an Aboriginal word meaning “meeting of the waters”.
