A suburb and beach under the local government area of Cairns Region in Queensland, Machans Beach is located 10.1 kilometres northeast of Cairns central business district, 9.5 kilometres north of Cairns International Airport, 20.9 kilometres southeast of Palm Cove, and 58 kilometres northeast of Mareeba. It is flanked by the Barron River to the south, the Coral Sea to the east, Barr Creek to the north and Captain Cook Highway. While the area was surveyed in 1885, there was no permanent settlement until the 1920s. The coastal suburb was named after one of the first permanent European settlers, Richard Machan, who also provided transportation services in the area using a Model T Ford. Today, Machans Beach remains a quaint coastal village that has resisted modernisation, and has been described as a minor museum of tropical house designs, with buildings transferred to the area from development sites around the Cairns region.
