A rural suburb under the local government area of Tablelands Region in the Atherton Tableland region of Queensland, Lake Eacham is situated approximately 10 kilometres north of Malanda, 8.5 kilometres southeast of Yungaburra, 45 kilometres southwest of Gordonvale, 21.5 kilometres east of Atherton and 1,701 kilometres north of the state capital of Brisbane. The town is best known for being the home of Lake Eacham, from which its name was derived. Also called Yidyam, Lake Eacham was part of the original 1886 survey plans that subdivided the area around the lake into farming lands. However, the lake and its surrounding shoreline were declared a “scenic reserve” in 1888 and managed as a National Park in 1934. Locals and visitors from nearby towns visit Lake Eacham and the Crater Lakes National Park area for swimming, canoeing, bird watching and bushwalking. The mainly residential township, meanwhile, offers accommodation options such as cottages and lodges.
