Kamerunga is a rural and residential area that is under the Cairns Regional Council of Queensland. Its name is thought to be derived from the Aboriginal name of the Barron Gorge, which is near the suburb. National parks around the area of Kamerunga include the Kamerunga Environmental Park, which was brought about by the 1989 Wet Tropics Tree Planting Scheme and opened in 1994. The park extends for 2 kilometres on both sides of the Barron River and was established by community groups to preserve, restore and reconstruct the naturally occurring vegetation along that part of the river. Before it was established, the river foreshores needed to be cleaned of rubbish, removed of weeds and have exotic plants controlled to turn it into the forested oasis it is today. Visitors to Kamerunga Environmental Park can enjoy the green scenery ad make use of picnic areas and other facilities made for the public’s recreational activities.
