A rural town and holiday village under the local government area of the Shire of Johnstone in the Mid North Coast region of Queensland, Flying Fish Point is located 7.7 kilometres east of Innisfail, 92.3 kilometres southeast of Cairns, 36 kilometres northeast of Silkwood and 1,624 kilometres north of the state capital of Brisbane. Explorer George Dalrymple named the town after the cutter “Flying Fish” during his expedition in 1873. The southern tip of the town faces the mouth of the Johnstone River and serves as its northern head; its southern head, the town of Coquette Point, was also named by Dalrymple. As it is among the richest estuary fishing spots in Far North Queensland and an ideal starting point for a reef expedition further east into the Coral Sea, the town has become a popular destination among beach-goers, boating enthusiasts, and fishing aficionados.
