The Cassowary Coast covers 4701 square km’s from Garradunga in the north to Cardwell in the south and the East Palmerston district in the west. Sitting between the hustle and bustle of Cairns and Townsville it is centred on the towns of Innisfail, Cardwell and Tully.
Connected from north to south by the Bruce Highway the area boasts one of the wettest in Australia, and consequently one of the greenest. There are two seasons on the Cassowary Coast, wet and dry. High rainfalls in the area also mean lush rainforests are teaming with an abundance of tropical life. The endangered southern Cassowary bird can be found here, a flightless bird that feeds mainly on fruit.

Not only is the area surrounded by World Heritage rainforests, the Cassowary Coast is lined with spectacular secluded beaches where palm trees fringe the fine white sand. Most famous of these is Mission Beach, a hit with international tourists, and a step off point and base from which to explore the Great Barrier Reef, Dunk Island and one of the world’s largest island National Parks, Hinchinbrook Island. The area is known as the nations banana growing hub and, an art deco district with cultural diversity.
Notable history in the region resides at Cardwell, where the Bush Telegraph built in 1870, now listed as one of the oldest buildings in North Queensland is now an open Heritage Centre where visitors get an insight into the workings of a telegraph station, the development of communications such as telegraph, road and rail, and the role of local government, police and judicial systems in North Queensland.
