Mount Louisa is a semi rural residential suburb located on the north and ocean side of Townsville city in Queensland. Nestled at the foothills of Mount Louisa itself, the older part of the suburb faces the ocean and Magnetic Island and the more recently built housing estates and developments sit on the western and northern aspects of the mount. The Bruce Highway bypasses the suburb.
During World War II approximately 4000 American personnel worked and lived at the base of Mount Louisa. Entertainment in the camp was held at Helton Hall, an open aired building, and hosted the likes of John Wayne, Gary Cooper and the Brook Woody Herman’s orchestra.
