While the locality sits next to the Coral Sea to its east, the waters are sheltered by the Orpheus and Palm island group further east. The residential area is concentrated close to the beach, while the farmlands are situated inland toward the western part of the locality. The locality’s seven-kilometre stretch of sandy beach on the northern end of Halifax Bay is patrolled by the Forrest Beach Surf Life-Saving Club and has an enclosure with stinger protection for swimmers. A popular recreational spot among beach-goers in Northern Queensland, the town also has several amenities geared for travellers, including a caravan park, motel, hotel, surf club, barbecue area and boat and ramp facilities.
