Rainbow Beach is a town located in Queensland, east of Gympie. The town is named after the rainbow-coloured sand dunes around the settlement. The colours were caused by the sand’s rich mineral content. While the town used to rely on sand mining to bolster their economy, Rainbow Beach’s economy is now heavily driven by tourism. Four-wheel drive enthusiasts flock to the Double Island Point, a coastal headland located east of town. The Great Sandy National Park is also a popular tourist spot. It features sand dunes, beaches, swamps, creeks, mangrove forests and freshwater lakes. While many tourists also go four-wheel driving in the park, other popular activities include whale watching and bushwalking. Nature lovers can also go on the Cooloola Beach Walk, a five-day hiking trail.
