Mount Isa is a city in the Gulf region of Queensland. With a growing population currently exceeding 22,000 people, the city has become the administrative, commercial and industrial centre of North West Queensland and outback Australia. The Leichhardt River divides the city into areas known as ‘mine-side’ and ‘town-side’. With it’s roots and history in mining, Mt Isa’s humble beginnings some 90 years ago have seen it swell to become one of the most productive single mining towns in world history based on the combined production of lead, silver, copper and zinc. It is now one of the largest and most important industrial powerhouses in the nation. Inside this working town, is a bubbly, friendly community atmosphere, which prides itself on ample shopping facilities, services and tourist attractions. The region also produces some of the country’s best beef and is hailed as the ‘Rodeo Capital of Australia’ with special memorials to the annually held Rotary Rodeo embedded in the cement in the heart of town. The World War II Mount Isa Underground Hospital is an iconic historical building, registered on the Queensland Heritage Register and popular with the traveller as is the Award Winning ‘Hard Times Mine’, where children and adults can get up close with mining machinery and see how tunnels are formed and shaped by the majestic boom drills!View on Map
