The town of Cloncurry is located in northwestern Queensland, situated 1,707 kilometres northwest of Brisbane, 121 kilometres east of Mount Isa, 783 kilometres west of Townsville via the Finders Highway, and sits close to the Cloncurry River. The town is the administrative centre of its local government area, the Shire of Cloncurry. It is named after the Cloncurry River, which was in turn named after Lady Elizabeth Cloncurry, the cousin of explorer Robert O’Hara Burke (one of the first Europeans to explore the area). Upon discovery of copper in the area in 1867, the town serviced the Great Australia Mine. It was surveyed in 1876 and declared a town in 1884. Cloncurry’s history as a mining town is reflected in a number of heritage-listed sites such as Mount Elliott Company Metallurgical Plan and Mill, Hampden Smelter and Mining Complex and Mount Elliott Mining Complex.
