A rural town next to the Herbert River and administered by the local government area of the Shire of Hinchinbrook in Queensland, Halifax is located 19 kilometres northeast of Ingham, 131 kilometres northwest of Townsville, 26.7 kilometres north of Forrest Beach and 1,488 kilometres northwest of the state capital of Brisbane. The town takes its name from Halifax Bay, which was chartered and named by Lieutenant James Cook in 1770. A blacksmith named August Anderssen bought the land where the present-day Halifax stands, and established sugar plantations on it. Settlement gradually progressed in the area, where a hotel, store and primary school opened in the early 1880s. Halifax was surveyed for township in 1885 and inaugural land sales soon followed. Today, the town is home to the Halifax Hotel, a family-owned and operated country-style hotel, a public library, community markets and a number of heritage-listed sites.
