A rural town next to the Herbert River and administered by the local government area of the Shire of Hinchinbrook in Queensland, Halifax is located 19 kilometres northeast of Ingham, 131 kilometres northwest of Townsville, 26.7 kilometres north of Forrest Beach and 1,488 kilometres northwest of the state capital of Brisbane. The town takes its name from Halifax Bay, which was chartered and named by Lieutenant James Cook in 1770.
