A former independent township surrounding a sugar mill, Edmonton eventually progressed into an outer suburb of Cairns in Queensland, Australia. It is within the jurisdiction of the Cairns Region local government area and situated approximately 10 kilometres south of Cairn’s centre along the Bruce Highway. In 1911, the location had a railway station that was called Edmonton, most likely named after the area of the same name in London, England. Sugar cane farming and harvesting was traditionally the city’s primary industry, but as the case with areas in Cairns, the lands that were previously used for sugar cane farming recently experienced urban sprawl and were converted into suburbs.
