The Leap is a rural community that was named after a local legend. In 1867, the early settlers had a dispute with the Aborigines in the area who were spearing their cattle in order to have food. During an altercation, the police got involved and chased an Aborigine woman named Kowaha who was carrying her baby. The woman was chased on top of Mt Mandarana, and instead of giving up herself to the authorities, she leaped off the cliff to her death. Her baby miraculously survived and lived in the area until she died in 1928. Since then, the area became known as The Leap.
