Located in Queensland, the small town of Hay Point is 40 kilometres to the south of Mackay. It is located on the southern end of Dalrymple Bay. Hay Point has two bulk coal terminals, Hay Point Services Coal Terminal and the Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal. The two coal terminals once exported 77 million tonnes of coal in 2003 to 2004, earning it the distinction of being one of the biggest coal ports in the whole world.
When two mining companies started massive coal mining in Goonyella, they built a separate rail track toward Hay Point’s coal terminals. The first coal was loaded in 1971 from a 1.5 kilometre wharf that was built for the industry’s services. There is a similar wharf owned by the government nearby, which is leased to the private sector.
Hay Point also has a bakery, a caravan park, a hotel and a general store. A lookout in Hay Point gives good views of both coal terminals.
