Surfers Paradise foreshore is fronted by a newly rejuvenated public space that features contemporary street-scaping, incorporating 95 Pandanus trees and vegetation, beach showers and numerous places to sit and reflect at the spectacular view. This is the setting for the Surfers Paradise Festival held in March and April annually, the weekly markets that spring up every Wednesday and Friday night and the Australian Sand Sculpting Championships plus a variety of other free events.
The district houses 40% of the Gold Coast’s accommodation, business facilities, and is serviced by Surfside bus-links, and light rail GLink trams.
Major events held in Surfers are the Gold Coast 600, the annual V8 supercar carnival held at the Surfers Paradise Street Circuit, and Schoolies Week, which attracts thousands of school leavers from around the country who descend on the Coast for a week of fun, partying and entertainment. Renowned icons to Surfers Paradise are the famous Meter Maids introduced in 1965 who sport a gold lycra bikini and an Akubra Hat as their attire and keep tourists happy by filling their car meters and posing for photos.
