Steiglitz is a coastal town in Gold Coast City. Its village is situated in Cabbage Tree Point, and sometimes, the town is called by the same name. The town was named after Stegeliztz, Germany, which is the hometown of the first family in Steiglitz, the Kleingschmidt family. Sugarcane became the main industry in Steiglitz during the 1800s when a farming district was developed. Because of the district’s proximity to swamps and lagoons, the area was an ideal environment for the growth of sugar cane.
In 1878, Carl Heinrich Heck established the Rocky Point Sugar Mill near Steiglitz. The sugar mill still stands today and is one of the oldest ones in Australia. Other sugar mills in Steiglitz eventually closed.
