Stapylton is located in the City of Gold Coast. The area was named after Granville William Chetwynd Stapylton, a surveyor killed by local Aborigines in 1840 while surveying the land. The suburb was where the first waste-to-energy facility was built. It also consists of quarries and the Mount Stapylton Weather Station. Mt Stapylton, known locally as Yellowwood Mountain, has acres of farm properties as well as industrial facilities.
Stapylton has a drive-in theatre that opened its doors in 1974. Yatala Drive-In Theatre is where families enjoy movies under the stars while engaging in cookouts. The 10-acre drive-in theatre has two large movie screens and is open daily to feature the latest movies. It also has a diner inspired by 1950s diners, complete with old movie posters, '50s music and Cadillac couches.
