Aside from the coast, the other dominant feature in the area is Mount Coolum. The mountain towers above the surrounding countryside and draws attention not just because of its size, but also because of its peculiar shape. Mount Coolum has no peak. The name “Coolum” is a derivation from “guloom” or “gulum,” an Undumbi word that means headless in English. The Aboriginal peoples believe that the “head” of Mount Coolum fell into the water to become Mudjimba Is. The town’s business establishments cater to tourists who go there to take a break, swim and surf.
