Wondunna is a rural residential suburb located in Hervey Bay. The area was named after an Aboriginal tracker, Willie Wondunna, who was from Fraser Island. It was formally named in 1980. Wondunna was popular for being one of the trackers who were tasked to hunt the Kelly Gang, headed by Edward “Ned” Kelly. To some, Ned Kelly was a murderous outlaw, while to others, he was a hero likened to Robin Hood. Ned Kelly was eventually captured and then hanged at the Old Melbourne Gaol in 1880.
