A small town under the local government area of Fraser Coast Regional Council of Queensland, Tiaro is located 27 kilometres south of Maryborough, 61.3 kilometres north of Gympie, 135 kilometres south of Bundaberg and 227 kilometres north of Brisbane. The town was originally part of and the centre of the Shire of Tiaro until it was dissolved in 2008. Tiaro’s name is an Aboriginal word that means “withered or dead tree,” and its beginnings can be traced back to the late 1860s, during which it served as an overnight stop between the gold fields of Gympie to the south and the port of Maryborough to the north. As the area is mostly surrounded by rural lands and the state forest, the main industries in Tiaro include beef and dairy cattle, orchards, sugar, timber felling and milling. Community amenities in town include a tourist stopover, a post office and three train stations.
