Nambour is a small town is South East Queensland. It lies 101 km’s north of the state capital Brisbane. It is nestled in the subtropical hinterland of the Sunshine Coast at the foot of the Blackall Range. It is currently the administrative centre of the Sunshine Coast region.
A short drive from the infamous “Big Pineapple” it is directly off the M1 Bruce Highway.
First called “Petries Creek” but later changed to Nambour, the name originates from the Aboriginal word “naamba” which refers to the red lowering bottle-brush in the areas surrounds.
Nambour is the central business district of the Sunshine Coast and highly residential with the industries in town primarily tourism and the growing of tropical fruits.
Situated close by is the Queensland Governments Maroochy Research Station. A major subtropical fruit and nut research and extension centre. Established in 1945, it has a laboratory, glasshouses, netted orchards, postharvest cool-rooms and a biotechnology facility.
Nambour is also referred to as a “Transition Town”, this is a grass roots community movement that seeks to raise awareness and create positive outcomes to help mitigate the ongoing effects of climate change and peak oil within the local community.
Nambour has a support infrastructure across the city including, private and state schools, a hospital, aged care facilities, parks a golf course and is serviced by Queensland Rail with a major train station connecting to other Sunshine Coast towns and Brisbane.
There are several major shopping centres, trendy cafés and restaurants and some individual eclectic shopping experiences such as bookstores, retro and vintage clothing, and arts and crafts.
Nambour’s unique heritage is showcased in the Nambour Museum, where life can be experienced through the generations since the first settlers arrived and visitors can learn about the major industries gone by, such as sugar cane and telecommunications.
